San Francisco Bay boaters are advised to be on the lookout as the U.S. Coast Guard will have an increased presence along the water this week as Fleet Week kicks off, officials said Monday.
Coast Guard officials are participating in this year’s week-long event, in addition to providing safety and security blanket via various cutters.
Fleet Week kicked off last Sunday and continues this Sunday, culminating with a waterfront air show featuring the famous Blue Angels of the United States Navy.
The week-long tradition, which was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, welcomes dozens of U.S. Navy ships and planes to honor the city’s military ties. This year’s event marks the 40th Fleet Week.
“Fleet Week San Francisco is just around the corner and the Coast Guard wants everyone to have a safe, fun time on the water,” Coast Guard Captain Taylor Lam said in a statement. “With this in mind, boaters are reminded to maintain a distance of 500 meters from all military vessels at all times. “
As part of the safety enforcement, the Coast Guard brought in additional personnel from Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle to assist.
In addition to keeping the distance, Coast Guard officials are also asking boaters to adhere to other safety measures, including avoiding the safe zone in the bay during the air show. The security zone will be enforced during the air show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 11:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Coast Guard officials said.
Coast Guard officials provided boaters with a map of the safe zone and areas for the Parade of Ships and Blue Angels respectively.
