The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people from a sinking commercial fishing vessel Thursday, Nov. 17, about five miles from Engelhard, North Carolina in Pamlico Sound.

North Carolina Coast Guard sector watchmen received a notification around 2 a.m. from the 35-foot fishing vessel, Heathers Breeze, that they were taking on water. A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet responded and transferred a crew member to the vessel to assist.

The fishing boat sank despite attempts to pump it out and the sailors were taken to Hatteras Inlet station.

“The maritime environment is often unpredictable and preparation is critical,” said Stephen Sawyer, sector search and rescue mission coordinator in North Carolina. “We recommend that commercial fishing vessels contact their local Coast Guard Commercial Fishing Safety Examiner for a full safety review, have a reliable means of communication, and always wear a life jacket.”
