6 people rescued by Coastguard helicopter after boat sinks

Tampa, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued six people from a 26-foot pleasure boat that began taking on water Sunday about 16 miles west of Bayport.

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater The MH-60 Jayhawks helicopter crew arrived on the scene, hoisted the six people out of the boat and transported them to the air base. There are no casualties.

The captain of the boat contacted the St. Petersburg coastguard sector at 3 p.m. for assistance on channel 16 VHF-FM.

“Channel 16 is an essential lifeline between boaters in distress and the Coast Guard,” said Lt. Jonathan Baucom, Air Station Clearwater’s duty operations officer. “Having a reliable communication device like a VHF marine radio can be a lifesaver when you need help.”
