Volunteers are the strength of many organizations in our community and that strength is certainly evident in the success of ElderCollege Delta.

Established in 2003, ElderCollege Delta is a nonprofit, volunteer-based corporation that provides opportunities for lifelong learning and social engagement for people over 50.

Events are informative, interactive and affordable in a safe and secure environment.

Gail Nicholas, Sally Norcott and Paulette Tattersall are just three of the organization’s dedicated volunteers.

“I’ve been volunteering all my life. I am now retired and interested in education and have taken many courses,” said Nicholas. “I’ve been with ElderCollege for about five years working on programs, communications, and volunteer work. There are eight who have helped us in various positions with regard to the programs. »
She said when some of her other volunteer positions with Delta Victim Services, Hospice and Guiding ended, she was looking for a way to keep giving back.

“I just wanted to put my time into it,” she said. “I really believe in keeping your mind sharp and helping people over 50.”

Tattersall said there are more than 30 volunteers who make up the board, run programs, presenters and ElderCollege Singers who perform throughout the community.

Tattersall has been a volunteer at ElderCollege for 16 years.

“I was an educator in the public school system and I was approaching early retirement. A good friend who was involved with ElderCollege at the time and also just retired, she gave me a little crush on me for about a year and then said, when are you going to embark on ElderCollege recalls Tattersall. “For me, it was a natural fit. I enjoyed some of the administrative work and took on a number of different roles, including vice president and then chairman of the board.

“Since then, I have remained very involved in the program committee and helped where I needed it.”

She says volunteering with ElderCollege is like being part of a family.

“It’s hard to imagine not being part of it sometimes,” she said.

Norcott has volunteered with ElderCollege for 19 years.

“Paulette is modest – she does so much for the organization,” added Norcott. “I help put together the two semesters with her and it’s a big job. “It also helps that we have a very passionate board that really believes in what ElderCollege does.

ElderCollege Delta is always looking for more volunteers.
