NEW LONDON – Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver the commencement address this year to the graduating class of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
The announcement was shared Friday morning by the academy. President Joe Biden delivered the commencement address to graduating cadets last year.
“We are honored to welcome the vice president and look forward to seeing her introduce the new leaders of the Coast Guard along with their commissions,” Rear Admiral Bill Kelly, superintendent of the academy, said in a statement. “It will also be a momentous time for our graduates before they set off across the country and around the world to take their place in the fleet.”
The private opening ceremony will take place at the academy at 11 a.m. on May 18.
The event will mark Harris’ first visit to the Coast Guard Academy. Former Vice President visited the New Haven area last year – stop for taste the pizza of the region along the way – to highlight the US rescue plan.
The Coast Guard Academy said vice presidents traditionally rotate to deliver addresses to service academies. Harris gave the Naval Academy’s commencement address last year.
