Male Crew Triumphs Over Coast Guard in Spring Season Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wesleyan men’s crew took first place in two of three events against the Coast Guard in a double meet Saturday morning on the Thames River.

The Varsity 8 boat (Haley fish ’22 – coxswain, Hayden Galusza ’22, Joe Kagan ’23, Chris Saade ’25, Olivier Diamond ’23, Paul Kiyonaga ’25, Jimmy McShane ’22, Hugo Harrington ’25 and Inesh Vythesvaran ’25) picked up an impressive victory with a cushion of nearly 17 seconds as the Cardinals clocked a time of 5:50.9 on the 1800m course, beating the Bears’ V8 boat which had a time of 6: 07.8.

Wesleyan kept rolling with a win in the second V8 boat (Leo Rosenblum ’25 – coxswain, Max Ewing ’24, Lucas Pavia ’25, Olivier Saffery ’23, Freddie Bell ’25, Nate Newcomer ’25, Theodore Zarobell ’24, Finn Brown ’23 and Golden Hudson ’22), clocking in at 5:58.8 to defeat the Coast Guard team who arrived with a time of 6:05.5.

The Bears managed a victory in the third game of the V8, beating the unit of the Cardinals (Meg Rubenstein ’25 – coxswain, Lucas Pavia ’25, Nick Dillon ’23, Freddie Bell ’25, Nate Newcomer ’25, Will Gannon ’25, Finn Brown ’23, Alex Glotzer ’25, Nick Jarrett ’25) with a time of 6: 18.6 against 6: 25.6 for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals return to the water on Saturday when they travel to Worcester to take on WPI, Colby and UMass.
