Delaware State Police Investigate Serious Scooter Collision – Fenwick Island – Delaware State Police

Fenwick Island, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a serious scooter collision that occurred Thursday afternoon at Fenwick Island.

On July 15, 2021, at approximately 12:14 p.m., a 2007 Chevrolet Express pickup truck operated by a 64 year old man from Selbyville was stopped heading west on Lighthouse Road while attempting to turn left into the parking lot of the Fenwick hardware store. A 2004 Yamaha scooter driven by a 70-year-old man from Selbyville was heading east on the shoulder to the eastbound of Lighthouse Road, approaching the entrance to the Fenwick hardware store. The Chevrolet driver did not see the scooter and started to turn left into the parking lot. As a result, the front of the Chevrolet struck the left side of the scooter in the eastbound shoulder. After the impact, the operator was thrown from the scooter and landed in the parking lot of the Fenwick hardware store. Immediately after impact, the Chevrolet came to a stop in a controlled fashion in the middle of the easterly lane and easterly shoulder. The scooter came to a stop in the parking lot of the Fenwick hardware store.

The driver of the Chevrolet was properly restrained and was not injured.

The driver of the scooter sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition.

The eastbound lane and eastbound shoulder of Lighthouse Road were closed for approximately an hour while the investigation was conducted by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
