Crew to be honored for rescuing 31 fishermen from disabled Canadian fishing vessel

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening Coast Guard community and service by supporting members and families, today announced that the New York Salutes the Coast Guard event will be held on 6 October at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers in New York. . The evening will highlight the missions and service of US Coast Guard personnel in the Northeast.


Now in its 40th year, New York Salutes the Coast Guard brings together Coast Guard leaders, industry leaders, congressional and government officials, and Coast Guard supporters for a night of patriotic fanfare. Representations include the Coast Guard Band and the US Coast Guard Academy Glee Club. Coast Guard Commander Admiral Linda Fagan, First Coast Guard District Commander Rear Admiral John Mauger and Coast Guard Area Commander New York Capt. Zeita Merchant are scheduled to attend. with other Coast Guard personnel.


Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod will be recognized at the event for a joint rescue on March 2, 2021 by the United States Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Air Force. Combined forces rescued thirty-one people from the Atlantic Destiny, a 143ft Canadian commercial fishing vessel, 130 nautical miles south of Nova Scotia, Canada. Shortly after 7 p.m. a call was received that the vessel had become disabled with a fire on board and taking on water. The weather at the scene was 35 mph with winds of 15 feet. Each of the 31 crew aboard the ship was safely evacuated in a coordinated effort, many of whom were hoisted in by helicopter. The ship sank to the bottom shortly after 9:30 a.m. the following day.


“The brave men and women of the Coast Guard are often called upon to act in difficult conditions,” said Susan Ludwig, President of the Coast Guard Foundation. “Thanks to the professionalism and dedication of these people, they were able to work with other agencies to rescue the crew of the Atlantic Destiny. We look forward to recognizing them in New York.

The Coast Guard Foundation’s New York Salutes The Coast Guard will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers in New York City. The event, which includes a reception and dinner, will begin at 6 p.m.
