MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The U.S. Coast Guard is advising against unauthorized travel from Florida to Cuba amid unrest in the island nation.
In a statement, Rear Admiral Eric Jones said the agency supports “the Cuban people in exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression and assembly.”

However, he added that “anyone considering a migrant trip should not take to the sea”.
âThe transit is dangerous and ruthless, as nearly 20 lives have been tragically lost in recent weeks as a result of these dangerous journeys. “

Jones then addressed all locals considering sailing to or near the island nation.
âThe Coast Guard and our local, state and federal partners are monitoring any activity that may indicate an increase in dangerous and illegal marine migration into the Straits of Florida; including departures of unauthorized vessels from Florida to Cuba, âJones said.

Jones ended the statement by warning that the Coast Guard and its federal partners are patrolling the Caribbean, both at sea and in the air.
